To scan a QR code on iPhone, open the Camera app, point it at the code so it’s visible in the viewfinder, and tap the link banner that appears. You don’t need to take a photo or install anything. You can also use the Code Scanner in Control Center, which opens a dedicated scanner with one tap.
Those are Apple’s own two methods, from its support page on scanning a QR code with your iPhone or iPad. Below are the steps for each, plus what to do with codes in screenshots and codes that won’t scan.
How to scan a QR code with the iPhone Camera app #
- Open the Camera app. Apple lists three ways in: the Home Screen, the Lock Screen, or Control Center.
- Use the regular photo mode and point the rear camera at the code. Hold the phone steady so the whole code fits in the frame, with a little space around it.
- Wait for the banner. When the iPhone recognizes the code, a small notification appears near the code or at the top of the screen showing where it leads.
- Read it, then tap it. The banner is your chance to check the destination before anything opens. Tap it to open the link, join the Wi-Fi network, add the contact, or whatever the code contains.
If you’d rather not open it, just move the camera away. Nothing happens until you tap.
How to use the Code Scanner in Control Center #
The Code Scanner is a separate full-screen scanner that doesn’t save anything to your photo library and is quicker to reach.
- Open Control Center. On iPhones with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right corner. On iPhones with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom.
- Tap the Scan Code button.
- Hold the iPhone over the code and tap the result that appears.
Add the Code Scanner if it’s missing #
Apple’s steps for adding it:
- Open Control Center.
- Touch and hold the background of the screen, then tap Add a Control.
- Pick Scan Code from the Control Center gallery.
- Tap the screen to go back to Control Center.
On older iOS versions the setup lives in Settings > Control Center instead. If your screen doesn’t match, check which iOS version you’re running in Settings > General > About.
What happens after you scan #
What the banner offers depends on what’s stored in the code:

The preview usually shows a short form of the destination, often just the website’s domain. That’s a quick check, but a long or strange address can hide details. How to scan a QR code from a screenshot or photo on iPhone #
The Camera app can’t read a code that’s already on your own screen. You have a few options:
- Photos app: open the screenshot. On recent iOS versions, Photos can recognize the code in the image. Touch and hold the code, or tap the Live Text button if it appears, to get the link.
- Google app: Google Lens in the Google app can read a code from an image in your photo library.
- A scanner app with photo import: pick the image and the app reads it.

Why won’t my iPhone scan a QR code? #
Try these in order:
- Check the setting. On many iOS versions, Settings > Camera has a Scan QR Codes switch. Make sure it’s on.
- Clean the lens. A smudged camera is the most common cause.
- Move back a bit. Being too close stops the camera focusing, and tiny codes need you to fill more of the frame without cropping the edges.
- Fix the light. Tilt the phone to get rid of glare on glossy paper or screens. In the dark, the Code Scanner is easier to use than the camera, and a flashlight from another phone helps.
- Try the Code Scanner if the Camera app misses it, or vice versa.
- Check the code itself. Damaged, faded, very low-contrast or cramped codes can be unreadable on any phone.

When a scanner app makes sense on iPhone #
For most people the built-in camera is enough, and the FBI’s own advice is to use your phone’s built-in scanner rather than download one. An app earns its place when you need something the camera doesn’t do:
- Full contents before anything opens. QR Handler puts every scan on a result screen showing the whole link, network, password or contact. For links it names the real site and flags shortened links, unencrypted http, raw IP addresses and look-alike characters. It never opens a code by itself.
- Scanning from your photos, with a Photo button that reads codes in screenshots.
- A history. Every scan is saved on your phone, searchable, with labels and favorites. You can turn auto-save off.
- Barcodes on products, tickets and parcels, not just QR codes.
- Dim or distant codes, with a flashlight and 1×, 2× and 3× zoom.

Frequently asked questions #
Do I need an app to scan QR codes on iPhone? #
No. The Camera app and the Code Scanner in Control Center both read QR codes. An app is only worth it if you want a scan history, scanning from photos, product barcodes or a full preview of each code.
Why does my iPhone camera not show a link when I point it at a QR code? #
The Scan QR Codes setting may be off, the lens may be dirty, or the camera may be too close to focus. Try the Code Scanner in Control Center, which is built only for codes.
Can iPhone scan QR codes from a screenshot? #
Not with the Camera app. Open the screenshot in Photos and touch and hold the code on recent iOS versions, or use Google Lens in the Google app or a scanner app that imports photos.
Is it safe to scan QR codes with my iPhone? #
